It’s September and Southern California is still 93 degrees with 31% humidity. Ninety-three isn’t that bad, right? Wrong. So. HOT. Blegh! While half the country is busy pulling out fall decor, from Halloween ghouls and pumpkins to giant Thanksgiving signs, we’re over here melting and cursing at the sweat stains on our t-shirts. So, in lieu of a pumpkin spice latte post, I’m bringing you the only thing that makes sense — a summery drink post.

All heil the Guava-Orange Slush, derived from my stockpile of Costco treasures. One day, while wandering the aisles, I found a twin pack of Sunrise Guava Nectar. Nectar is generally a thicker consistency than juice and does well when mixed with water and/or juices. Nectars can be consumed as-is but the thickness can sometimes be a tad too much for the pallette. What it’s perfect for, though, is this fun tropical blend that’s quick, easy and a guaranteed hit!

Why pay $5 for a store-made ice blended fruity anything when you can concoct something at home for a few cents? The kids will love it, you’ll love it, the dog will love it, the fish will love it, the gecko will love it — just kidding. Hey, there’s nothing wrong with buying fun and fancy blends for the popular stores; I love those, too. It’s the Frugal Fran in me that cringes a little at the expense, though. To find a good middle ground, I started tinkering because I like a good bargain and love a good recipe. Mixing the two together makes for some fun experiments!

How do you make this cute little frozen treat? Grab some guava nectar, a bottle of orange juice and read on for details! This particular guava nectar find is still available at Costco and the OJ is in stock year-round. Guava is an unrefrigerated twin pack, usually stocked with the fruit juices and the OJ is a 3-pack from the refrigerated aisle. Have fun making this and enjoy it to the fullest!

Ingredients

  • 2.5c Grown Right Guava Nectar

  • 1c Kirkland Orange Juice

  • 2c Ice

Directions

  • Combine all ingredients into a blender. Start by blending on ‘chop’ setting to break up the ice. Then switch to any other setting that will continue to break down the ice and give you the slushy consistency. Be careful not to over blend as the contents will become soupy.
  • Pour into individual cups and add whipped spray topping and a toothpick umbrella for fun (both optional).
