HALLOWEEN FOOD – SPIDERY DEVILED EGGS

Creepy, crawly, olive spiders and deliciously perfected deviled eggs. A match made in….someone’s terrible Halloween food menu!!!! I’ll admit that I hate spiders and creating these was a little stomach-churning. Once it was done, however, the finished product made me surprisingly proud. I chuckled at the sight of these eggs sitting on the table, knowing I’d ruined them with ‘spiders’.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • Large canned olives, whole
  • 1 dozen large eggs
  • Your favorite deviled egg recipe

CREATIVITY UNLEASHED:

Yolk preparation: Once your hard boiled eggs have cooled, slice them in half (lengthwise) and scoop out yolks into a separate bowl. Use your favorite deviled egg recipe to prepare the yolks and then set it in the fridge to chill for 15-20 minutes.

Spiders: while yolk mixture is chilling, slice 12 olives in half (lengthwise) to create spider bodies, set aside. Slice more olives in half, lengthwise, then cut each half into smaller slivers to make the legs. You can experiment with the width of the legs.

Building the eggs: Scoop your refrigerated yolk filling into a zip-top sandwich-sized bag (or larger if necessary). Spoon the filling into one corner of the bag, eliminate as much air as possible from the bag and zip it up. Gather or fold the remaining portion of the bag to contain the filling in the intended corner of the bag. Snip the corner tip of the bag to create a hole; you will squeeze the filling out of this gap. Squeeze carefully and fill each egg white gully until your heart is content.

Gently place the spider bodies in the center of the yolk filling and press ‘legs’ into the sides. They will hang off the edge of the egg white and that is ok. For a more realistic spider, place four legs on each side of the ‘body’.

Plate your spider eggs and serve immediately, or, cover in plastic wrap and stick in the fridge until you’re ready to party!
